Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Grote Knip

Grote Knip is another excellent beach for the whole family. The kick-out for the diver is a little far, but if you take your time, and enjoy the scenery, you'll be at the reef edge before you know it! 4.3 km South of the Northernmost village of Westpunt, turn at the intersection below.

You'll find plenty of trees for shade, and enough beach to really stretch out! Just a short hike down these stairs, and you'll be at the entry point. The entry is sandy and gentle. Playa Knip (Kenepa) is just to your left (the next site); continue on to Grote Knip. You'll see this marker indicating the turn for Kenepa Beaches. Make the turn and follow the road. It will take you a few minutes to kick-out, but, hey, you're a Shore Diver!

Snorkeled here on two occasions in July, 2012. Fairly easy entry, although it seems that most beaches in Curacao have a section of broken coral you need to navigate when entering the water. Reef along left side of cove and just outside the cove in good condition. Beware of cliff jumpers on your way out. Sea life of note included the dreaded lion fish, barracuda, and squid.

Grote Knip is a challenging dive spot in that there are many steps to carry gear down and then it is a looong swim out the reef. The beach was busy even though the bar/restaurant was closed while we were there. So no charge for access but no baths rooms or dunk tanks either. There is chair rental when they are open at $4. Very pretty beach with high cliffs surrounding the beach for a very calm ocean. No surf or current to speak of inside the cove. Barracuda, eels, crab, lobster here hanging out while we were there. Like the beach very much but the swim out and stairs left a little to be desired.

This is a pretty good dive site, but be prepared for a loooong swim about 8-10 min. to reef. Would do to say you have done it, then if you want to dive area again do Kleine knip, its a little easier, and next site over.
