Kayak Point County Park

The entry couldn't be easier! Perfect for a first dive, or getting accustomed to new gear. The pier is great for fishing or taking in the view. Picnic tables line the beach area of the park. Like most parks in the Northwest, the entrance is well-marked and groomed. The topography is immediately apparent: easy, shallow entry, dropping off to a gentle slope. Parking is rustic, but there is plenty available. It is just a short hike to the beach, so you can gear up at your car. The entry is easy when the surf is low. It's advisable not to negotiate the reef when the surf is high.

This is a 'big' test of 'everything'!

Yes, this was an easy dive. However it was also a bad dive. We could not see anything, as vis was five feet or less. If we had good vis, I'm guessing it would have been a good, easy dive. I'm guessing I'll give it one more try later on, though.

Really Boring. Site out the West side of the park North of the pier gets to 50' with in 300 yards of shore. Nothing to see but a few snails and small crabs. A few large star fish lots of large clams. The clam beds to the south (small bay) are really shallow and the vis was terrible. The easy access doesn't make up for the lack of anything to see. Park currently charges $5.00 for parking.

I seldom dive this spot, even though it is the site listed which is nearest my home. I do visit this park often, since it is so near. As for diving, the access and entry are superb, there is rarely any surf, and currents are usually manageable. The problem ? Boring! I dived this yesterday just to make sure of my previous assessment. The only fish I saw were flounder, even though people fishing at the park claim to catch smelt and sea-run cutthroat. I did see a lot of Dungeness crab, however, this area is temporarily closed to crab. I also saw sea stars, moon snails, nudibranchs, hermit crab, and patches of eelgrass. Kayak Point is a beautiful little park, with nesting bald eagles (I saw four yesterday), and all of the appropriate seabirds in the adjoining bay. In the late spring and early summer, it is a place to see grey whales feeding. It also has a protected boat ramp where I like to put in my sea kayak. There is a four dollar charge for using the park. The park also has a campground on the bluff above the beach which includes Yurt rentals. So, if you want a nice place to go on a picnic or campout, and throw in a dive while you are there, consider it.

9/25/1962 Bottom drops of fairly quickly. Some waves and ebbing tide made Visibility very poor. Unless you count star fish: NO FISH. My log reports that I enjoyed the dive and I do remember returning to dive there: I just can't remember why!
