#16 - Queen Anne's Revenge Wreck
Bahamas, Coco Cay

This wreck is a replica of the Queen Anne's Revenge. A very colorfull wreck, with impressive canons!
Original wreck information: "The Queen Anne's Revenge was the name of Blackbeard's famous pirate ship. Originally named Concord, the vessel was built by England in 1710, but captured by the French a year later. The ship was modified to hold more cargo and renamed La Concorde. The slave-ship was captured again by pirate Captain Benjamin Hornigold on November 28, 1717 near the island of Martinique. Hornigold turned the ship over to one of his pirates - Edward Teach, who was later known as Blackbeard, and made him Captain. Blackbeard converted La Concorde into his flagship, adding 20 more cannons and renaming it the Queen Anne's Revenge. With it he ranged the west coast of Africa and the Caribbean, taking English, Dutch and Portuguese ships.
Queen Anne's Revenge was described as a 300-ton frigate armed with 40 cannon. Her name may have come from the War of the Spanish Succession, which was known in the Americas as Queen Anne's War, and in which Blackbeard was thought to have fought.
Blackbeard's flotilla was chased into Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina by Lieutenant Robert Maynard, Captain of the HMS Pearl. Maynard had been sent to capture Blackbeard by the governor of Virginia, Alexander Spotswood. Queen Anne's Revenge ran aground while attempting to enter the inlet, and another of Blackbeard's ships, Adventure, was lost trying to free her. Blackbeard disbanded the flotilla, and escaped by transferring supplies onto a smaller ship. Queen Annes Revenge and Adventure were left stranded, and Captain Stede Bonnet ("The Gentleman Pirate"), took command of the ten-gun pirate sloop Revenge and parted ways with Blackbeard.
In 2005, researchers are thought to have found the famous flagship two miles from the North Carolina shore and are raising cannon and other artifacts hoping to prove it to be the Queen Anne's Revenge. Twenty cannons and more than 16,000 artifacts have been recovered from the wreckage.
The research and recovery team include Bradley Rodgers from East Carolina University, and project director Mark Wilde-Ramsing."

Very white sands. Nice, shallow, no-limit dive. I believe it would be a good candidate site for a first-time night diver (training).
Not much marine life on our visit, but was told the site is usually more active.

This is the world's deepest blue hole at 663' and is situated in a scenic location on an attractive and reef-protected cove with a white sand beach. The blue hole is immediately off the beach and half surrounded by overgrown beachrock cliffs. It is the location of the establishment of a new world's freediving record in April, 2007. At the surface the blue hole is about 200' in diameter. It funnels down into a narrower throat about 100' in diameter, opening again with increasing depth (~100) to resemble a bottle of Lancers in profile. Exotic non-native lionfish have been observed frequently in the blue hole environs. Nearby coves also provide Atlantic Ocean side reef/cove diving opportunities. Attached Blue Hole Cove has a scenic arcuate beach and is about half a mile long with a shallow fronting reef. Adjacent Turtle Cove provides a fronting forereef and backreef experience, a deeper channel through the reef and an interesting coral garden, starting just off the beach on the north half of the more than mile long cove. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean%27s_Blue_Hole
One mile long, partially paved road over beachrock ridge leaves Queen's Highway to the east (Atlantic side) across from phone booth along highway. About 4 miles north of Clarence Town, Long Island, Bahamas. See Google Earth imagery for access details (not that difficult) through sparsely settled subdivision within a half mile of the blue hole.

Normally Ben's is closed in the summer because migratory bats nest there. An additional $10 entrance fee is charged by the Lucayan National Park.

#44 - Tiger Beach
Bahamas
Unrated
(0)
Located an hour’s boat ride from the West End of Grand Bahama, this small, shallow sand flat is arguably one of the best places in the world to dive with tiger sharks. Sightings are reliable and conditions consistent, providing excellent photography opportunities year-round. Shark-fishing is prohibited in the Bahamas, meaning that these awesome predators are fully protected and currently thriving in the waters around the island chain.
While shark diving Tiger Beach is undoubtedly the highlight of a dive trip to the Bahamas, this shouldn’t detract from healthy reef systems packed with life, and the warm, clear waters that make diving Tiger Beach and the rest of the Bahamas a true pleasure.
