#1 - Sabang Beach
Philippines, Pacific
beginner
(4)
Sabang Beach is the site directly in front of the Sabang resorts in Puerto Galera. The entry is complicated by boat mooring and traffic and there is lots of debris in the water, but once you get out to the wrecks, the dive is quite worthwhile. Between the wrecks are many isolated coral bommies and small stretches of reefs. An hour underwater here will deliver most of the usual Pacific marine life and dozens of macro subjects worth photographing. I recommend hiring a guide the first time out to find the highlights of the dive.
Rather than driving, taking a boat from the Luzon mainland at Batangas harbor to Puerto Galera is the usual route. There are streets and cars in Puerto Galera and a thriving, if somewhat seamy, nightlife but neither is a necessary part of the adventure.

This is a very interesting and atipic dive ! Lake's name comes from a large barracuda living in the lake.
First, you have to climb up a very steep incline.
The top 4m of the lake water is fresh sweet water, below it is salt water. Temperatures range from 28 (from surface to 18m) to 40 degrees Celsius (from 14m to 35m). At approx. 35m the water changes from clear water to a brown color.
There is a 30m penetration cave, at the bottom of the lake. Take care !
NW of Coron Island.
Barracuda Lake is also known as Cayangan lake.

This is a Japanese civilian cargo ship, sunk on 24 September 1944 by the Americans. It is around 112 meters long and lies between 12 and 26 meters deep. Lying on her starboard side this is a great wreck to dive, even during December, the visibility was good enough to enjoy. It has 2 boilers in the centre, open as salvager for the engines in the 60's and the torpedo's in the 40's took it's toll. Many fish of all types of species, especially scorpion fish live here. Corals are abundant too. Really a fantastic dive, for night or day!
Access to the site is by boat from one of the various islands, the closest being Lusong Island, second is basuanga Island and third is Sangat Island. The Buoy clearly marks the spot.

We came here looking for sharks and sea cows as they are both often spotted in this bay.
Vis was low (April) as the sea was still active and high winds prevented us from taking a good look... never the less we saw plenty of turtles, giant cuttle fish in numbers, and large angel fish as well as some barracuda .
If you have your own boat and compressor its worth diving and exploring this area.
We explored this area for the first time ever with the help of Palawan national geographic society and the help of sheridan hotel in sabang beach who are looking to put up a dive shop. Until they do so it is a hard site to find and dive as you need to bring your own tanks and gear.. there is no dive shop there at this stage (April 2011).
If you do explore the area until we get more information best you ask the local fisherman for local info.

This wreck was sunk in March 2003 by the PGDA (Puerto Galera Dive Association) and sits upright in 30m of seawater. She was an inter-island freighter that was prepared especially to make a dive site and reef habitat. There have been several large holes cut into the deck and any hazardous items removed from the inside to make it ideal for penetration.
The hull was originally constructed from plate steel and there are many bulkheads inside to hide Moray Eels and thousands of tiny Commensal and Cleaner Shrimps. The upper decks were constructed from structural steel and timber but over the years all the timber has rotted away leaving the skeletal beams in place as a reminder of her deck lines.
The helm of the vessel can be found lying on the deck but the ships wheel is long gone. Towards the bow a mast stands proud and is clad now in Oyster Clams and hard corals. The beams of the main decks are also clad in hard and soft corals with several small Gorgonian Fans and Sea Whips swaying in the current. At the stern a large cleat has a line buoyed to the surface.
A myriad of fish gather here at the wreck and call her their home, Trumpet Fish, Fusiliers, Rabbit Fish, Sweetlips, Snappers and Batfish are all here in abundance. Strong surface currents are sometimes prevalent at this dive site; always descend with the buoy rope in sight whenever possible. Great for wide angle photography, this site is one of the signature dives of Puerto Galera and not to be missed.
This dive site is 2 minutes boat ride from Big Apple Dive Resort.

One of the most interesting caves and site for those who loves steep wall diving
Starting at 12 m down to 40 m or more, this is a place where current is not an issue most of the time. This dive site is located next to Ernie's Cave few hundred meters away to the south where cliffs are overhanging to the sea. This site can be rough during southwesterly wind.
Appropriate dive procedure is to jump from the boat at the exact spot of the cave then the boat will move away and wait for the divers to exit (Boat waiting area will depend on the chose dive direction). Dive usually heading to the south direction, Descend using the wall as reference and you will see the Cave that lies at 30-32 m. The cave entrance is approx. 25 ft. wide and approx. 30 ft. high.
The Inside tunnel extends approx. 45 ft. depth inward with approx. 10 ft. high and 7 ft. wide. Outside the cave heading south offers a combination of slope and steep wall with diverse Marines life dwells and the abundant healthy soft corals.
20-25 minutes by boat from Tablas Fun Resot Looc bay heading north and few hundreds away to Heinz Caves..
Zac Cave is also known as Ferrol site 2.
