Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Lake Crescent/East Beach

Lake Crescent is known for clear water (visibility usually ranges 30-50 feet and light penetrates to 120 feet and deeper making it a good location for deep dives. Around the lake there are several attractions such as an underwater forest, train wrecks, some very large fish, a sunken barge, and a giant boulder garden that is the remnant of an ancient land slide that separated lake Sutherland from crescent about 10,000 years ago Located about 15 miles west of Port Angeles, WA on highway 101, inside Olympic National Park, Follow signs toward east beach. once on the beach head left around the point to massive rock garden or off the first dock that you see to the right lies a sunken barge in about 35 fsw

The lake has few accesses along HWY 101, but the few that are there offer very easy access to the water. I only dove this in August, and the water was fairly warm on the surface with the really cold thermoclines starting at about 50'. The bottom drops off very dramatically (45 deg slope) into very clear water!! We dove the two car wrecks, one from the 1920's (in which a newly wed couple died just a few hundred yards away), and a large sedan from the 1950's, which turned out to be a stolen car. Both wrecks are deep at 180' and 190', and are in pristine condition. Very little else to see; no vegetation, an occasional trout, and some very dramatic rock walls, large fallen trees, and other rock structures. The water is so clear at 190' I didn't even need or turn on my light!! See some of our surface pics at http://groups.msn.com/ExtremeNWDivers -- Very fun dive, and the scenery is spectacular, so everyone should do it once. Do not attempt the cars unless you have the proper gear, gas and training, and please respect the site of the 1920's car as it is a memorial -- please do not even touch it!

This site is a good dive for all skill levels. Not a lot of animal life. There are some interesting car wrecks around the point of East Beach. The vis is some of the best in Washington state. The site can be boring if not diving a wreck or rock garden.
