Josiah's Bay

Grand Central is the only serious cave/cavern dive in the BVI.  Whether you call it a cave or a cavern is a question of semantics - it runs about 200 feet in, and some kind of ambient light is available throughout because of a sink-hole to the surface near the middle.  But it would be very difficult to exit through that, so the dive is best regarded as an out-and-back penetration.  Lights are mandatory, although the dive is usually made without guidelines.  The entrance to the cavern is a bit of a squeeze.

The dive is comparatively shallow, and mostly rocky, so risk of silt-out is small.  Marine life in the cave is quite limited, but as of 2009 there was still a decent sized Goliath Grouper living in the cave.


Located on the North shore of Guana Island, access is by boat only.  Anchoring is very difficult, so dive is usually done by live boat drop-off and pick-up.

Wreck of the Fearless is probably the least popular of the BVI's wreck dives.  Although located adjacent to a coral reef on a sandy bottom, little marine life flourishes.  Visibility is usually low because of the slightly silty composition of the bottom.  The site is also a rough anchorage in exposed position in the Sir Francis Drake Channel.

The wreck is wooden, and after over 20 years underwater is now extremely fragile and close to collapse.  Any form of penetration of the superstructure is extremely unwise.  

By boat only.  Site is located about half a mile north of Great Harbour, Peter Island.  Can be difficult to locate in high seas.  Approximately 15 minutes by boat from Road Town, Tortola.

Mooring balls have been placed on the site by the National Parks trust.

Blonde Rock is a set of two pinnacles rising from 20m to within 3,5m of the surface.  Lots of valleys and ledges.  Saw turtles and barracudas; some sharks have been reported here.  Lots of lobster.

Forms part of the RMS Rhone national marine park.

The site gets in name from the long brownish yellow sea whips that populate the top of the pinnacle.

A difficult site to dive when the weather is rough.


Can only be accessed by boat.  About 15 minutes from Road Town, and about 8 minutes from Peter Island.  

Located between Dead Chest and Salt Islands. There are two Mooring buoys.  When water is calm, you can see the top of the pinnacle.  When rough, it can be hard to locate the buoys.

Tip of Scrub is an unusual dive in the British Virgin Islands in that it routinely has poor visibility, and sometimes strong currents can make the dive uncomfortable for less experienced divers.

However, the marine life is outstanding at the site.  Sharks, devil rays, octopus, lobster are all frequently seen at the site.  The site also has a goliath grouper in residence.


By boat only.  Sit is about 20 minutes from East End, Tortola, located just north of the easternmost tip of Scrub Island.

Mooring ball placed on site by the National Parks Trust, but it is fairly close to the rocks, so mooring can be precarious in high seas.

Tip of Scrub is also known as Scrub Island.
