Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at North Star
North Star is the Westernmost of four dive sites in a 4km stretch of highway on the North shore. You will find a wall and a cavern to explore here with great sights in-between. The dive site is nicely protected from NE swells.
On highway 80 (the North Shore Road), the small parking area is located just East of Picnic in Paradise and a couple of kilometers West of Cane Bay.

The entry from your parking spot is just 15 meters away. Suit up at your car, and carefully make your way to the water's edge.
You can tell it gets rather shallow for quite a distance. You will be able to walk for about 30 meters until it is safe to swim. Hold your buddy's hand to keep your stability. To the left of this picture, you should be able to see a mooring buoy that marks the edge of the wall and the cavern. Surface swim to this area, drop down, and enjoy!
The point to the right protects this small bay from swells that affect other sites to the East.

West of North Star is the Carambola Resort. They allow guest divers. A new dive shop has taken up residence at the resort - Sweet Bottom Divers. They have a 4 wheel gator that will take you and your gear to a deck they have built on the West side of the resort, where the beach sand entry point is. They have Air only, no Nitrox. Go out to the buoy and head West. Pristine, untouched diving.

Dived spring 2009 & 2010. North star heading West has a large Green eel residing in the cave. Northstar heading East has 2 large Green eels residing in a small cave between 2 coral heads. There is a 7 foot Nurse shark that has been hanging out that will come up to you, but is not aggressive. Several Turtles.

I have dived St Croix in 2007 & 2008 in spring. North Star and twins Palms are side by side. Great dive. Long swim. Twin palms (across from Willie's Wish) is easier entry as there is some sand and flat coral surface. North Star is very rocky. There are 2 dilapidated house farther down next to a dirt road that goes to the beach. You can enter there also, go down and head east & also reach north star and still make it back to where you came in. Warning: your rental car will be probably be broken into & contents stolen. There is a rash of car break-ins along the north shore. They wait for divers to go in and then get into your car. Stash your belongings in the brush. There is also great diving directly behind the Carambola Resort. Far west end of the resort beach is all sand & very easy entry. Go out to buoy & head west. Current is no problem below 40 feet on north shore. The St Croix reef is very healthy. Lots of life. Several Turtles. A medium size sting ray will allow you to touch it.

North Star is the "best" shore accessible "wall" dive. The other "walls" are actually steep slopes. North Star drops straight down from about 40 feet to 90-100 feet before sloping sand begins. Lots of overhangs and slots with a curving wall so something is in sunlight all day. Easy entry with short 7-8 minute swim to the wall. Very few fish (empty caves, overhangs) throughout St. Croix (over fished and hunted). This and Rust-op Twist are the best shore dives, North Star having best topography.

Entry can be hard. The Wall is absolutely awesome at this site! Loved it!

Like the last diver, this is a really great dive. I have dived in good days and bad, and I would recommend only the good days. The entry can be really difficult because of the rocks you have to walk through, so the more you can see where you are stepping, the better. We did see a turtle resting on the bottom, so we rested there too and just watched -- always an amazing sight. You won't find any crowds here, so enjoy.

This is by far my favorite dive on the island but the surge has to be right. it can be a very hard entry it there are 3 feet seas, there is a cavern and turtle on almost every dive. there is a spot 135 that has the most magnificent black coral garden.

This site is remote, but worth it. Leave nothing in your car, and leave it unlocked. It will be fine. The entry is easy, and the coral is healthy. There is very varied fish life. The "cave" is around 60 feet or so. If you want to go deeper, there is a pile of ancient anchors below the cave. You will see no one else here, and have a private, relaxing time.

The entry is a little tough you have to wade 50 yards over rocky bottom. The dive is worth it the wall is beautiful and there were no other divers around.
