Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Pelagic Blackwater Night Dive
Start the Pelagic Dive in Kona, Hawaii just after dusk, floating tethered offshore in the deep dark sea. Just wait to see what goes by, usually not descending any lower than 50 feet. The mesmerizing jellies put on a colorful display that can only be described as breathtaking. Some zooplankton, that only rises to the surface to feed when the lights go out, are now visible to us. Our lights are but small twinkles in the vast blackness of the sea.

Have done this by boat and by shore entry. By shore I bring high power lights. I like the large Big Blue 65,000 lumen lights. Choose an entry that gets deep quickly. USE a well illuminated float with dive flag for safety and compliance to state regulations. Best where there is a current moving with mimimal boat traffic. By boat my favorite has been on the Kona Aggresssor when it was in operations. Best to dive this with a person with local experience and knowlege. I bring a camera.
