Nice dive for beginners. Big schools of barracudas pass by in this dive site. Also, there are a lot of yellow-tailed snappers who will swim around you. If you are lucky, you might see some sting rays. The coral reefs here are very nice. To dive this site, you need to be staying at the Club Med in Punta Cana. You go to the wall, suddenly, 40 m wall vertical, you dive between 10 to 40 m, to the south, during 20 to 30 minutes depend of your depth dive, you go up, and you make your parada de seguridad, looking fishes, coral, etc... when you comeback to the boat, Great dive, big fun. From la Romana sailing port (behind the bridge to Casa de Campo), take a tourist boat to Santa Catalina Island, the dive tour operator let you for the first dive at the wall.

Patato is a very nice dive site with wonderful coral formations and coral tunnel systems. Really beautiful to dive there at around noon, when the sun rays shine trough small holes into the caves. Outside the reef depth is average 12m (max 13.6). Sometimes nurse sharks can be found under rocks and in small caves. When you dive trough one of the many tunnels and get to the sandy part inside the reef depth is about 7m. On guided tours you will be shown the amazing caves, tunnels and coral formations at this dive site. Depending on the ocean/waves there is surge and visibility varies between 10m and 30m. Local dive centers almost at every hotel offer boat dives at Patato. Patato is also known as Batato.

La Caleta MPA is a small protected area created in 1986, to protect once-healthy coral reefs and preserve archeological remnants of a Taino population that once lived there. To current times, this MPA has worked as a paper-park, mostly due to lack of capacity of the authorities and awareness by the local community and visitors. RCDR started collecting baseline data on reef health since 3 years ago, to allow future comparison and to determine the effectiveness of any management actions, we have a legal agreement with the Ministry of Environment to conduct management activities involving the local community. RCDR plans to restore the Park's infrastructure, while increasing awareness and capacity of local stakeholders by implementing better management practices. These management actions has already started to increase the health of local reefs that would in turn create better conditions for a sustainable fishing industry, which will eventually be displaced by ecotourism and diving industry, making La Caleta MPA a model for sustainable use and management. There is a parking lot, and as small beach where several local fishermen use their wooden boats to take divers our to sites, all sites have mooring buoys, and the dive area is protected from fishing by self regulation by local fishermen, although, recreational divers still spearfish here, bad divers! I did seven dives out of the Oasis Canoa; this was the only one that had really good fish life. As a matter of fact, it was quite surprising how much better the fish life was on this one than all the other dives we did. South of Bayahibe.
