Debra Everhart's Dive Log

I was there in June 2007. We had a little trouble finding it because it is not particularly well marked. We were tent camping and the sites were pretty nice. There was water and electric at several of them also. The quarry has all kinds of things for divers to look at. There's an airplane with a skeleton in the cockpit, tractor trailer, cars, trucks, boats quarry equipment etc. In June the air temp was about 80 degrees. Water temp was about 75 degrees and there was a definite thermocline at 15 feet at which time the temp dropped to about 65 degrees. And there were other thermoclines also. It was a nice area. Nice little dive shop on the premises and the people that were running it were also very nice.

Summersville Lake is good for all kinds of activities. It is frequently used for training and check out dives. There is a 25 foot platform and I believe there may be one around 80 feet (or actually it may be the winter boat ramp that they use for AOW). Visibility is pretty good depending on how many people are in the water. There are 3 sunken boats throughout the lake and some huge boulders. Fish are sunnies and bass and crayfish. Definitely an enjoyable time.

For those of us who are land locked…this is a great place. The warm water is the big draw. The lake water cools the power plant across the way and that's what keeps it so warm. The air temp and wind can be troublesome, though, being that we are in the mountains. Also remember that technically this is an altitude dive. There are two 25 foot platforms, a 50 foot, and a 100 foot. Tons of catfish and some big carp.
