Sasquatch's Dive Log

This was my second dive here in as many weeks. The first time I was happy to see a shower for rinsing gear (and sandy children) but, alas, on this dive there was no rinsing, water was shut off. The entire operation of the park seems to be suffering from an economic downturn but the admission is still by donation (I suggest 3 to 5 bucks per visit). The surface swim to the buoys is a bit of a distance at 300 yards but there is plenty to see once you can get yourself under water and before I knew it I was at the reefs. Visibility was crap. This time of year it usually is but I had fun with the small critters and practicing navigation skills. There was some boat traffic. I carried a float/flag. Be aware that the local LDS has pretty restrictive hours, like they open at noon on Monday and are closed on Sunday.

This was my first dive at Gerstle Cove and it is a very nice place. I didn't care for the bowling ball sized rocks on the beach so I would recommend that you dive this location on high slack tide. My timing was waaaay off and I dove near the end of low tide. Once I got in the water I was amazed at the beauty of the rocks and plant life. Plenty of curious fish to look at while they check you out, too. The restrooms weren't open when I was there a couple of weeks ago but the showers/rinse station was operating. Services are scarce in the area. Bodega Bay for air and most everything else now that I think about it. Most of the restaurants and motels I saw were closed beyond Bodega Bay but I suspect that was a seasonal thing. I look forward to going again soon.

The road leading to the parking area is closed. This means a long walk down the RR tracks with your gear, like half a mile, friends. I tried talking to a guard but he didn't know anything pertaining to the future of this site. I suppose you could swim East from the T Dock to this site. Thought I'd post this as a WARNING for divers that were planning to dive here. Sea ya!
