Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Amphitrite

AMPHITRITE is a bronze (I think!) mermaid approx 10 ft. tall and I believe she is by a Canadian artist. She is in approx 50 ft. not far from the wreck of David Nicholson. For more info, you can visit their site at Sunsethouse.com

Good news, bad news; this is a great site but if the resort is busy there will be a sign up near the entrance saying "No shore diving". There is a wall at the right height for slipping into your BC, but if that entry is busy waddle up to the right and there is another pool you can jump into and then swim out. The shallows are beat up by the surf but you will find peacock flounder, squid and trunkfish all looking for dinner. There is also a resident octopus living in a ball of chain. At about the 28' line you start finding sponges, fans and anemones. As you get deeper there is more life. Straight out from the entry is a landing craft and to its right is the mermaid. The Atlantis sub visits both so if you hear whining be prepared to entertain the pod people. Be careful, this whole reef is under the mooring field for Sunset House's fleet and right next to their dock. There are three ladders to get out, but two I wouldn't go near in a surge.

Go to sunset House Hotel in Georgetown, Grand Cayman. Giant stride off the concrete walkway and you are in 15 feet of surge. Head 150 degrees until you hit 50 feet depth and there you will find Simon Morris's 9 ft cast bronze sculpture of the most beautiful mermaid, Amphitrite. The reef is bashed from beginner divers, those taking courses, and much use, but still plenty of marine life. Very crowded!!! With rescue courses tying people to the mermaid, navigation courses, photography courses, open water courses. The exit was a few short steps up the ladder and a freshwater rinse off. Easy, pretty, way too busy but the mermaid was a joy to behold with all the angel fish surrounding her head. After Amphitrite, the best part was the apres dive beer at My Bar a few steps from the shore.

This is an easy shoredive from the Sunset House. A giant stride into 12-15 feet of water and then approx. 75 yard swim to the mermaid. She has a pair of resident Angel fish and is frequented by a tourist submarine. She is in 50 feet of crystal clear water. She makes a great night dive also.
