Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Phosphate Dock
Dive 2 hours before high slack tide (2 hours is all you get). BEST TALK TO THE LOCALS. VERY DANGEROUS PLACE. If it's done during tarpoon season, if the tide don't get you, the great whites will! Never actually dove it, because I didn't know the tide tables, and it's better I didn't! School of over 300 Great Whites off shore (found out later from the dive shop). It's not as great as when the dock was used years ago, but fish still school there. It's about 40' deep, and not for the beginner. -- Mad Marl
Go to the end of the island of Boca Grande. Park in public parking. Follow the beach around the point. Find Phosphate Dock (you can't miss it!)

Dove this site by boat and shore many time. Conducted Goliath Groper Counts there for Sea Grant in June, many times. Those were during Tarpon time. Could be epic or crap depending on the conditions. Slack tide is the time to go.

The water was crystal clear! We saw a lot of fish, turtles and SNAKES! Our camp site was big and clean (they emptied the garbage can every two hours). Our site was right on the river. We had bad campers across from us. They played loud music and let off firecrackers until 3Am. They got expelled from the park the next day, when a flood of complaints hit the office. The snorkeling was great (did not get to try diving).

I have been diving on a number of jetties along the Gulf Coast and found this site to be very enjoyable for a number of reasons. Access to the jetties is an easy walk, even with gear in the summer, and the rock lined pool on the shore side of the wall makes a good staging point for dive buddies. To leave the pool and cross over to the channel side time your kick to coincide with wave action out of the channel. This will let you cross over without becoming a sea urchin pincushion. Even so, be sure to wear gloves. Once you make it over, there is a good variety of marine life (Sgt. majors, small grouper, stingrays, crabs etc). On my last dive at this spot I saw a large 250lb+ jewfish. Be aware of fishing lines, active and discarded, as well as boat traffic. This is a fun dive on a high slack tide, with 35-50 feet of vis on a good day.

Unbelievable fish, Goliath Grouper at the end, lots of big snook and snapper, dangerous currents, dive only at slack tide.
