Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Playa Largu

Playa Largu is the third of a series of sites in this area. Check out the previous two sites for entrance instructions. You'll find a rather large expanse of beach here for sunning, diving or whatever! Northwest of Willemstad, travel 12.3 km West on Weg Naar Westpunt from the Weg Naar Hato intersection to San Pedro. Turn left to head toward Soto. Travel 5.3 km to reach the intersection shown on Playa Manzalino site. Follow the directions from there.

The bay is well-protected from swells. You may park next to the shade trees. Either direction is world-class!

We found this dive site as we visited Playa Manzanila. The entrance to the sea is much better because of the good visibility of the ground. It was very remote and very quiet as we dived there. We had to pay 8,00 NAF at the entrance porter and the way to the site was quit rough but it was manageable with our rental car if you drive very slowly. The dive site was very nice and full of sea live. We saw five morays and a green one was traveling between the corals.

Just for a note....there was a guy charging $4 to get down to this and the 3 sites nearby. Otherwise, great dives, along with the 3 nearby sites.

Without a doubt this is the Best Snorkeling site in Curacao that we discovered in our 2 trips to the Island. The journey to the site is an adventure in of itself. The dirt road is easy to miss off the main road - long and bumpy - but navigable even in a sub-compact car if you drive slowly. Don't be scared of the 'toll collector' at the abandoned mansion. 5 Guilders gets you in. We went in August 2010 on a weekday and there was only one other couple (divers) on the whole stretch of beach. It is very isolated and we had some fears based on review in 2007 of an armed robbery, but we saw nobody around looking for trouble and we never lock our doors, leave valuables, carry large amounts of cash or sport fancy watches or jewelry. Just beautiful snorkeling. A little tricky getting in and out with coral and rocks, but well worth it. Go 3/4 to the West End of beach (right) and look for boat small buoy (Clorox bottle). This is probably where diving boats tie up, and for good reason as you will see. Booties are a must!

I first dove this reef as a boat dive, then found it from shore on my last day in Curacao. Follow the dirt road to the landhuis (a fun drive in itself), pay $3 to access, and you have 3 beaches to choose from. Playa Largu is the last one, with an easy drive right along the edge of the beach. No facilities, but then again, likely no other people there either. Find a place to park, suit up, and it's an easy 50 yard snorkel out to the reef. In August I had calm water, little current, 82 degree water, and 60-80' vis. A couple of good underwater landmarks make navigation easy, and I was told the reef is great in both directions (I only did 1 dive from shore, and went off to the left--east). Was told turtles are common, though I didn't see any. Otherwise, a great reef, in good shape, with good life.

Three dollars a car load gets you access to multiple dive sites in this area that are wonderful. Beautiful white sandy beach, and no other divers! Just what I like! The trip in is rough over a dirt road, etc.

Talk about your own private beach in paradise. We arrive at the gate at 8:00 am, 5 gilders to enter but well worth it. There are three beaches to dive from here. We dove Manzalino and Largu. We had the beach all to ourselves. Parked under a tree and walked 10 feet to the water. Quite a few rocks for about 20 feet out, but easy enough to pick your path through most of it. Very little current or wave action. Saw no other divers here in the water, on the beach or on the road. Encountered a turtle on the reef that was extremely friendly until a damselfish chased him off. Great vis on this site and full sun made for an amazing visual experience.

Secluded site, somewhat difficult to find. As a result it may not be dived too often from shore. Booties are a must. No facilities on site. Some large pieces of fire coral and Elkhorn coral in shallows make navigation during entrance and exit important. Fish life made the result well worth the effort.

The last dive site for this turn off and WELL WORTH the drive which was not long or rough at all. We always rent a truck (not 4 WD) for our trips here as they are very shore dive friendly vehicles, but there were cars parked there as well for people just enjoying the beach. After driving past the muddy salt plain, hang a right and drive along the beach. There a number of turnouts where you can park under the trees. We parked across from a sandy looking entry (the second turnout), suited up and headed left against the current. The reef has a lot of sandy areas in it that give it a reflective quality and brighten up the dive. We had seen a number of 'ruffly' looking critters attached to coral from plain white, to tipped in electric blue, and discovered at this dive site that they are a type of nudibranch. Looking to the left you can see the houses at Cas Abao.

One of my favorite dive sites on the island... I did three dives here between February and April 02. However, on my first attempt to dive here (early Feb) the surf was so bad we never made it in. Fortunately I didn't let that experience stop me from coming back. The coral here, hard and soft, is beautiful and starts very shallow (10-15ft). The reef was best between 30-50ft, vis was excellent and I saw turtles every dive. This site seemed pretty secluded, we always had it to ourselves. Entry is a little rough... boots are a must.

Short distance to the reef, less than 3 minutes of snorkeling. Reef full of life. Amazing vis (more than 35 meters) warm crystal clear water with almost no currents made this one of the best dive sites of the island. Lots of fish (all you can imagine), squids, turtles and so on. The beach was deserted and we had it all for us. We did not repeat this site because we discovered it in our last dive day of the trip. Take fresh water, and some thing to eat after the dive with you (no facilities at the beach)

One of the out of the way spots that are not worth the effort. Road in and out is rough and for the cost of admission It's not a bad dive just not great after diving some other spots on the island
