Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Lion Island (Manunouha Island)

Directly out from the sandy beach toward the mainland is, well, more sand, and the wreck of a recent fiberglass sloop. Of far more interest is the reef wall and old steel shipwreck off to the right side of the island, as you face the mainland. The depths there run from 0 to 60 feet / 18 m. The life is SPECTACULAR. This area, as with all of Papua New Guinea, is simply a continuation of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. You'll see an incredible variety of life in 60' visibility, including basket starfish, woebegone, spider shells, cowries, lionfish, and a rainbow of butterfly fish. Located east from Port Moresby, in the center of a bay near the Papua New Guinea university research facility & a small boat harbor. Only reachable by car followed by (any kind of) boat, but then you dive off the beach at Lion Island....so it's technically a shore dive.
