Eric Olson's Dive Log

I snorkeled this spot late in the afternoon. I was surprised to find parking at 4:00 and the beach wasn't too crowded. However, as stated, parking here can be a nightmare. This is a great protected spot for snorkeling on the inside part of the reef where you can see many Hawaiian fish. However, if you are a strong swimmer go out to the outside part of the reef. Know your limits; if you don't think that you can make it past the breakers then don't go! On the day I was there conditions were very calm. The outside part of the reef has great drop offs and this is where I spotted 30 Green Sea Turtles within 100 feet of me feeding on the top of the reef. It was a amazing to see so many in one spot. Tons of other species of fish and great visibility. Remember to not touch the reef as you swim over it as human contact damages it. And don't touch the turtles, since they are a protected species. Again, only go to the outside part of the reef if conditions permit and if you are a strong swimmer.

I dove this site after a rain storm so visibility was only around 50 feet. Saw lots of fish, and lots of other divers. The parking was a little crowded, and seeing 10 other divers in the water wasn't what I came to Kauai to see. Good dive for a beginner.

This was a wonderful dive. We found a lots of turtles at a cleaning station. As said before, this dive is shallow for diving and a little deep for snorkeling. However, being shallow means more time with the turtles if you're diving! We saw fish of all sorts including scorpion fish, eels, and even a large Spotted Eagle Ray. Visibility was around 100 feet and the entry can be a little tricky, so look for the break in the rocks on the beach. It's a good warm-up dive, and I would go again in a heartbeat.
